Trip Overview

Dolpa is the largest district of Nepal covering 5.36% of the total land of the country, located at 28°43’N to 29°43’N latitude, and 82°23’E to 83°41’E longitude. Elevation ranges from 1,525 to 7,625 m (5,003 to 25,016 ft). The district borders Tibet (China) on the north and northeast, Jumla and Mugu districts of Karnali on the west, Myagdi, Jajarkot and Rukum on the south, and Mustang on the east.
The district consists of Shey Phoksundo National Park which is the deepest lake in Nepal. The park protects endangered animals like the snow leopard, musk deer and the Tibetan wolf. Dolpa district is one of the remote district of Nepal which consists of wide glacial valleys and ridges. Trekking in this district will let you learn about the remote and traditional lifestyles along with the Himalayas of Nepal.

Itinerary

Detailed Itinerary:
Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu (1400 m)
Upon your arrival at Kathmandu Airport, we will meet you at the airport and escort you to your hotel. Overnight stay in Kathmandu hotel.

Day 02: Kathmandu to Nepalgunj flight
From Kathmandu, we will take a bus or fly to Nepalgunj. Nepalgunj, a town in the western Terai, is very close to the Indian border and the Bardia Nationl Park. Overnight stay in Nepalgunj.

Day 03: Trek from Nepalgunj to Juphal (2475 m) flight and Juphal to Dunai (2140m)/ 3hrs.
Today we take a 35 minutes long flight to Juphal .Our trekking starts from Juphal.The trail descends and winds through local villages. We trek by the riverside and pass Roop Ghar with the water mill and finally reach the village of Dunai. Overnight stay in Dunai.

Day 04: Trek from Dunai to Chhepka (2687 m)/ 6hrs
Today we will trek along classic trekking route of Dolpo via Sulighar, inside Shey Phoksundo National Park. We will trek through the lush tropical forest.  After crossing the bridge twice in Shangta - once over Phoksundo River and once over the confluence of Phoksundo Khola and Maiaba Khola we will begin to head north towards Chhepka. Overnight stay in Chhepka.

Day 05: Trek from Chhepka to Chunuwar / Amchi Hospital (3000 m)/ 6hrs
Today we will trek beside Phoksundo Khola, along the amazingly peaceful region the trail goes high above Phoksundo Khola to Rechi 3011m, where we will stop for the lunch. We will continue our walk along the river side trail to Sulligad Dovan and arrive to Amchi Hospital. Amchi refers to traditional doctors who heal infections and diseases using the herbal medicine found in Dolpo. Overnight stay in Amchi.

Day 06: Trek from Chunuwar / Amchi Hospital to Phoksundo Lake (3600m)/ 5-6hrs
Today we will join the direct trail to Phoksundo Lake climbing through forests of big cedars on to Palam (3710m), a winter settlement used by the people of the Ringmo village. Below Ringmo we will cross a bridge and follow the trail to Phoksundo Lake - the deepest lake of the world. Overnight stay in Phoksundo Lake.

Day 07: Phoksundo Rest day
Today we explore the area around the magnificent Phoksundo Lake. The lake is famous for its magnificent turquoise color and spectacular scenery. We will explore the natural sites and enjoy our nature tour. Overnight stay in Phoksundo lake.

Day 08: Trek from Phoksundo to Sallaghari (3630m)/ 5-6hrs trek

Today we will climb along the narrow trail cut on a cliff standing vertically straight above Phoksundo Lake which will bring us to another side of Phoksundo Lake. Then we will slide down for ninety minutes along the beautiful forests. Overnight stay in Sallaghari

Day 09: Trek from Sallaghari to Nangdala HC (4717m)/ 3 hrs trek
Today we will trek for almost three hours to reach Kangla/Nangdala Base Camp 4100m. We will ascend up the narrow defile of Tuk Kyaksa River. We will come across the wide valley then after walking for a while further reaches to the massive rock slab, which is Kang La/Nangdala Base Camp. Overnight stay in Nagdala Base Camp.

Day 10: Trek from Nangdala HC to Shey Gompa (4343m) crossing Nangdala pass (5350m)/ 5-6hrs
Today we will trek to Shey Gompa crossing the Kangla/Nangdala pass. Then we will enter the real Dolpo enjoying the wonderful views from the Kang La Pass which includes Cyrstal Mountain, peaks Shey Shikkar and Kang Chunne. Then we will  descend steeply down to the valley floor  along the river. A red chorten marks the entrance to Shey. Overnight stay in Shey Gompa.

Day 11: Trek from Shey Gompa to Namgung Gompa (4360m) crossing Shey La Pass (5100m)/ 6-7hrs
Today we will explore Shey Gompa. After exploration we will continue our trek beside Sephu Khola for couple of hours. Then we will begin to climb up towards the top of Shey La Pass for  two hours. Then we will walk downhill from the pass for 2 hours which will brings us to Namgung. Overnight stay in Namgung.

Day 12: Trek from Namgong Gompa to Saldang (3770m)/ 4-5hrs
After exploring the monastery of Namgung we will head towards Saldang- a beautiful village with lots of dry land surrounded hills. Amchi tradition and Buddhism in Dolpo thrives here at Saldang. Overnight stay in Saldang.

Day 13: Saldang Day hike to Yangjer Gumba (4590m)
Today we will have a day hike after early breakfast to Yanjer- the richest monastery of this region. We will pack our lunch and will come back to Saldang for the night. 

Day 14: Trek from Saldang to Komash Village (4060m)/ 6 hrs trek
Today we will trek for six hours and reach the village of Komash- a village which bears similarity to a Tibetan village. Overnight stay in Komash.

Day 15: Komash Village to Shimen (3850m)/ 6hrs trek
Today we will trek from Komash village to shimen. En route we may see some endangered animals like snow leopard or Blue sheep. After almost five hours of comfortable hike we arrive to Shimen. Overnight stay in Shimen.

Day 16: Trek from Shimen to Tinje (4110m) 5-6 hrs trek
Today we will trek along the side of Panjyang Khola. There are some villages and gompas on the way to Tinje. Tinje is a very beautiful valley. Overnight stay in Tinje.

Day 17: Trek from Tinje Village to Yak Kharka 6-7 hrs trek
Today we will trek to Yak Kharka. The trail to Yak Kharka chases the trail beside Panjyan River to the Thalum Khola, which flows from Thalum Lek and arrive at Yak Kharka. Yak Kharka is an open grazing ground for yaks and sheep. Overnight stay in Yak Kharka.

Day 18: Trek from Yak Kharka to Tokyu (4240m) 5-6 hrs trek
After crossing the bridges over several streams the trek arrives to Choila North Pass 5040m. The trail to Choila North BC is difficult trek. Almost after two hours steep climb brings us to the top of Choila Pass from where the fascinating sights of Tokyu camps are seen. A downhill and leveled trail beside Choila Khola brings us to Tokyu. Overnight stay in Tokyu.

Day 19: Trek from Tokyu to Dho Tarap (3944m) 2 hrs trek
Today after breakfast we will walk towards Dho Tarap. Then we will spend the day at Dho Tarap-  a large village decorated by colourfull prayer flags. We will enjoy a nature tour and a cultural program consisting of traditional Tibetan dances and songs presented by the villagers. We will explore around Ribo Bumpa Monastery, Drakmar Dewa Monastery, Mekhyim Monastery, Dhoro Monastery and a Bon Gompa of Shipichowk among others. Make your decision wisely while choosing the monastery. Overnight stay in Dho Tarap.

Day 20: Trek from Dho Tarap to Naworpani (3475m) 6-7 hrs trek
Today we will walk  along the flat trail beside Tarap Khola to Mirububane Khola Dovan- the confluence of Tarap Khola and Mirubabane Khola. Then the trek slides down to the bridge over Klang Khloa at Langa Camp. The trail continues Tarap Khola with the picturesque views of arid landscapes. Thwn we will reach to Nawarpani. Overnight stay in Naworpani. 

Day 21: Trek from Naworpani to Lashicap (2775m) 5-6 hrs trek
Today we will walk beside Tarap Khola enjoying the view of green forest. After a while we will slide up high above Tarap Khola to Lamchaur. Cross passing Lahini Odar, we descend down the hill to Laishicap. Overnight stay in Lashicap.
 
Day 22: Trek from Lashicap to Dunai 6hrs trek
Today we will trek along the green woodlands high above Thuli Bheri River towards Tarakot. We will continue our trek beside Thuli Bheri River to Dunai via Lawan and Byasgad and reach to Dunai. Overnight stay in Dunai.

Day 23: Trek from Dunai to Juphal 6-7 hrs trek
Today’s trail goes by the side of Bheri river till Kalagawda and then the trail ascends towards Juphal. After a couple of hours trek from Dunai brings us to Juphal.

Day 24: Juphal to Nepalgunj flight and Nepalgunj to Kathmandu flight
From Juphal we will fly to Nepalgunj by early morning flight. In Nepalgunj you will have to spend some time by looking around the airport settlement or can go to the hotel and have a rest. By afternoon flight you will be flying to Kathmandu.

FAQ
1. What preparations should I make before trekking?
It is always a good idea to involve yourself in doing physical exercises before trekking. Not that you have to be all athletic and muscular to trek. An average level of physical fitness will make the journey less stressful.

2.Is drinking water easily available?
Availability of drinking water is not the problem. The problem is the cost of it at higher altitude. As you gain height, the price of water rises up to 2-3$ per liter.

An alternative way of getting drinking water is by having your water bottles filled in tea houses. Tea houses will provide you boiled water for about 1$ per liter. They are completely safe for drinking.

3.What kind of food is available during trekking?
Food is not of any concern while trekking. You will get all kinds of cuisines. For breakfast, tea houses will provide you with eggs cooked in your preferred style along with pan cakes, bread butter, roti, and so on.Various other dishes like pizza, pasta, momo, chowmein and many more are also available. The most preferred dish is Dal Bhaat. It is a typical Nepali meal. Rice is served with vegetable curry, lentils, tomato chutney and meat curry. 

4. What are the risks associated with trekking?
Trekking is an extreme sport and does come with a lot of risks. Some unavoidable risks are avalanche, heavy rainfall, earthquake, landslide and other such natural calamities.

You might fall and injure yourself or catch some viral flue. The deadliest risk of trekking is AMS or Acute Mountain Sickness. This sickness occurs when a great altitude is gained and the body fails to adjust to the changing pressures associated with it. Anyone can fall a victim of the sickness and if not treated in time, it can be fatal.

5. Do I need a guide/porter to trek?
There is no such hard and fast rule that you must have one. But it is highly advisable to travel with them. Some of the treks cannot be trekked without a guide most of them are the restricted ones.

A guide is someone who will help you with navigations. He will also have a better idea about the places to live in and eat at can negotiated prices for you.
